Facebook is looking to create an option for children under 13 to have their own account.
Currently, the social media site bans children under 13. However, Facebook administrators are aware that many young users will simply lie about their age to get on. They are now developing new software to allow parents to control who their children “Friend” and what applications they use on the site.
“They have a tendency to friend anybody, and you don't always know who you're friending,” says Alesa Smith, a parent against children using Facebook.
Facebook hopes putting children's profiles under parental control will force them to comply with federal regulations regarding those under 13 online.
“If you do let their kids do it, make sure you have the user ID and password so you can get in there and monitor what your kids are putting on there,” says Stephen Anderson.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook is developing special applications for children's pages.
