There are several things that can be done to keep costs for cooling low this summer.
The following are a few points to stick to so the electricity costs are kept to a minimum:
- Keep the AC filters clean
- Use air conditioning only when you need it; otherwise use windows
- Start swamp coolers and air conditioners in the morning (it's hard to cool them in the late afternoon when it's hot)
- Keep the thermostat at a constant temperature (suggested at 78 degrees)
Home heating and cooling experts say it is a bad idea to turn up the thermostat when gone and then turn it back down when home. The heat gets into the walls and floorboards and takes a lot of energy to cool down.
