KEARNS, Utah – A man turned himself in after stealing a Unified Police patrol car and taking officers on a short chase through Kearns.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says calls were made to the Unified Police Dept. on Thursday regarding a suspicious man who was looking into house windows and yards. An officer noticed a man near 4700 South matching that suspect description.

Hoyal says that after the officer approached and tried to handcuff him, the suspect turned around and began to fight with the officer. During the fight, the suspect attempted to take the officer’s weapon.

As the officer was retrieving her weapon, the suspect ran around to the driver’s side of her car and got into the driver’s seat, Hoyal said. The officer’s attempt to tase the suspect was unsuccessful and he was able to drive off.

After a short chase, the suspect eventually gave up and surrendered to police. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on multiple charges, including attempting to disarm an officer, resisting arrest, stealing a police car and fleeing.
