SALT LAKE CITY - Utahns spent more money on alcohol in 2012 than they spent in 2011, according to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

In 2011, Utahns and Utah businesses spent $6.7 million on alcohol during the week before Christmas. That number rose to $7.5 million for the week before Christmas in 2012.

The DABC reports sales went up by 8.5 percent at its 45 stores in 2012. This may be partially attributed to improvements in the economy and a lower unemployment rate in 2012.
