PROVO, Utah - Provo-native rock band Neon Trees canceled their Wednesday night show at Sundance, instead putting on a series of concerts in Provo at a fraction of the price.
The band has done shows at Sundance in the past, but when their promoter raised ticket prices for the show from $35 to $50, they decided to do something about it.
"Sundance is turning into this thing where it seems like every promoter in the world is thinking, 'How can I capitalize on the nightlife up there during this time,'" said Branden Campbell, bassist and vocalist for the band. "I started calling it 'Scumdance' this week."
Instead of performing at Sundance, the band decided to do some impromptu shows at Club Velour in Provo where the band played its first shows.
The band will make no money from the shows, instead giving all the profits to Club Velour. They say it's a way to give back to the club and fans who helped launch their career.
"If you forget the people that are helping you do this, then it's really selfish and kind of pointless honestly," said Tyler Glenn, lead singer for the band. "It's crazy to me that a band that has success can all of a sudden forget that there are kids out there."
Two Friday shows sold out within three minutes of them going up for sale online. A third show on Thursday night was first come, first served and several hundred people waited out in the cold for their chance at seeing the local band live. All tickets cost $10.
