SALT LAKE COUNTY -- A man and his grandson who became lost in the snow while elk hunting have been found after a search and rescue effort by the Unified Police Department on Sunday.
Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department said the winter conditions were a factor, but they were fortunate to already have rescue crews in the area when they received word the two had been lost.
"They were just lost and cold as a result of the weather coming in here this afternoon," Hoyal said.
Hoyal said the 52-year-old man and his 13-year-old grandson started their ordeal at the Little Dell Recreation Area before becoming lost about five miles into the back country. The two were able to call for help using a cell phone.
"We were able to have a brief phone conversation with the lost individuals just before their cell phone went dead, and we were able to locate, or obtain, the location as to where they were at, and we were able to tell them to stay put," he said.
It took about four hours to get the two down from the mountain. The pair were examined by medics, and they did not have any serious injuries.
