SALT LAKE CITY — Several dozen University of Utah students were evacuated after a gas leak at two campus residential halls.

The leak was discovered Thursday night after a maintenance man smelled the gas.

Questar crews were on the scene to examine and fix the issue.

As a precaution, 129 students were evacuated and the university provided them an alternative place to spend the night.

“From time to time, you’re going to have gas leaks,” said Mike Halligan, University of Utah spokesman. “This is one of the larger ones we’ve had on campus in a while. They’re fairly uncommon, actually, on campus.”

The leak affected residential buildings 828 and 829. The cause of the leak has not yet been determined.

Students received the all clear and were allowed to return to the building at approximately 8 a.m. Friday.
