Utah immigration activists speak out in support of ‘Gang of Eight’ proposal

Posted

SALT LAKE CITY – Immigration activists held a press conference on Thursday to address the immigration reform proposal that was unveiled this week.

The legislation has been proposed by the so-called Gang of Eight, a group of bipartisan U.S. senators designed to help secure our nation’s borders. The proposal includes a pathway to citizenship with fees and waiting periods and tougher border control.

“I think it’s a great proposal. It’s a win-win for everybody. Nobody is getting 100 percent of what they wanted. Certainly we would have wished there would have been shorter time, but given all the circumstances, this is a good proposal,” said Tony Yapias, a Latino community leader.

Activists say they’re excited for the proposal, so immigrants may be able to travel to visit their loved ones and receive work permits.
