PROVO, Utah - Aspiring singers of all ages gathered to show off their skills at the Vocal Sport competition earlier this month, but the goal isn't just to win...it's to get noticed and to get the chance to sing with some big Hollywood stars.
The purpose of the event was to get local talent noticed by people in the music industry, and nearly 80 Utahns took advantage, performing in front of talent scouts, agents, casting directors and producers.
"Everybody loves to perform. Everyone wants to be seen, so this is the perfect opportunity for them to get their name out there and to have people who can actually help them get somewhere. Talent agencies and whatnot be able to see them perform and so it's really fun to see them reach their goals and find their dreams," said Melissa Whitehead, co-founder of Vocal Sport.
At the end of the night, each performer received a professional critique of their performance. Talent scouts also awarded prizes to the performer they think stood out.
"The feedback is always good, constructive criticism is always a good thing. You know what you did right and what you can work on and it's just a great experience," said Mercy Jensen.
The contest was about giving everyone - young or old - a shot at the stars.
"It's giving these musicians, these singers, no matter what age they are, to network to meet the people that make things happen in the industry in Utah," said Keith Evans, emcee for Vocal Sport.
Two of the winners are going on to compete for the Gigg.com Stadium of Fire Tournament, which starts on May 9. The winner will get to share the stage with Kelly Clarkson and Carly Rae Jepsen.
