SALT LAKE CITY  — Members of the Westminster College graduating class of 2013 had a big name take the stage at their commencement Saturday.

Actor Robert Redford spoke at the 138th commencement, which was held at the Maverik Center. Redford addressed nearly 1,000 graduates from 37 states and 29 foreign countries.

He told graduates: “I encourage you to take this education and go forward with it. There is a quote I would leave you with, and that is: To dare is to lose one’s self momentarily, not to dare is to lose one’s self.”

Redford, who is the founder and president of the Sundance Institute, received a Doctor of Humanities degree at the ceremony.

The largest number of degrees awarded were in the areas of nursing, psychology, business administration, economics and marketing. The graduating class consisted of about 542 undergraduates and 404 graduate students, according to a press release from Westminster College.
