DRAPER – Hundreds of male and female inmates are graduating Wednesday with high school diplomas.

This year sets a new record for graduates at the Utah State Prison in Draper, as 360 men and women received their diplomas. A pair of graduation ceremonies was held at the prison Wednesday morning.

In addition, another 140 inmates will likewise walk in a commencement ceremony at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison on June 19.

According to the press release, a high school education works in conjunction with vocational trades, job opportunities, treatment programs, life skills, and other opportunities to equip offenders with tools they need to succeed. Giving offenders tools like these allows them to contribute to the community rather than stay in the prison system.
