FRUIT HEIGHTS — A 19-year-old man was booked into the Davis County Jail after he allegedly stole felony amounts of cash and used it to buy gifts for his girlfriend.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a man who described Matthew Robert King as a family friend. The victim said King was staying at his residence and showed interest in a cash box.

The next day, both King and the money had disappeared.

An investigation brought deputies to the West Point home of King’s girlfriend, a minor.

Deputies reported King had been using some of the stolen money to buy his girlfriend gifts such as bicycles, clothes and a flat screen TV, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said in a posting on Facebook.

King also appeared to have used cash to pay for services including, among other things, a motel stay, the posting said.

King was eventually tracked to Kaysville, where he allegedly tried to run away deputies and was caught after a short pursuit.

King faces charges of theft, possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and failure to respond to officer’s signal to stop.
