Bear shot and killed at Wyoming Boy Scout camp

Posted

EVANSTON, Wyo. – A young black bear was shot and killed after it made its way to the Hinckley Scout Ranch near Evanston this week.

Rick Barnes with the Great Salt Lake Council of the Boy Scouts of America says the bear sniffed out a bag of candy on Wednesday night. Staff tried to get the bear out of the camp but it wouldn’t leave, so they shot and killed the bear out of safety concerns for the boys.

“Unfortunately the bear did come in and we had to take it down. We haven’t had any bear incidents for quite a few years so people aren’t used to this but we did train them appropriately.”

Barnes says the Division of Wildlife Resources gave scouts and leaders bear safety tips and rules earlier in the week. The troop that left the candy out was asked to leave early.
