SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City firefighter was injured while fighting a grass fire in the Avenues Monday.

Crews responded to the blaze 3:56 p.m. near 1250 E. 11th Avenue. The flames were consuming a field northeast of Shriners Hospital.

Firefighters positioned themselves directly north of the fire to protect the houses on the north side of Virginia Street. There was a concern that the flames could reach houses if it jumped the street.

The fire was contained between Virginia Street and 11th Avenue. The injured firefighter was taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
