Police, service organizations reach out to homeless at Pioneer Park

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department teamed up with various service organizations Wednesday to reach out to homeless people at Pioneer Park.

Other organizations involved in the outreach effort included The Road Home, Fourth Street Clinic, Volunteers of America, the Utah Department of Veterans Affairs, Catholic Community Services and Valley Mental Health.

“We’re basically just taking an individual and seeing what we can do as far as coordinating our efforts,” said Sgt. Michelle Ross, Salt Lake City Police Department. “We have them here, we can do the interview and start the process and get them off the street.”

Ross said a few of the people they were trying to help were leery about talking to police, but the event was generally well-received and they plan to make it a weekly event.
