Road in Butterfield Canyon closed after mudslides

Posted

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah – Authorities have closed the road running through Butterfield Canyon, which is in south-western Salt Lake County, because rainfall has caused several rock and mudslides to hit the road.

There were no injuries reported in connection with the slides.

Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department said UPD began working with Tooele County Sheriff’s Office personnel to close the canyon at about 2:25 p.m. Friday.

Hoyal said there aren’t any homes in the area, and he said the primary reason for closing the road is to keep curious people from going up the road and getting trapped.

Deputies were working Friday afternoon to help Kennecott employees in the area get out of the canyon.
