MURRAY, Utah — A Murray townhouse fire forced several residents to evacuate their homes Monday morning.

Unified Fire Authority was dispatched to 1400 East and 6000 South after receiving reports of a house fire and heavy smoke in the area.

Authorities said an elderly couple who lived in the townhouse were startled awake by the smoke alarm. The couple and their dog were able to safely evacuate the home before fire crews arrived.

According to firefighters, the garage of the home was filled with smoke, and the fire affected the unit next door.
