Some residents concerned after developer requests zoning change for University Mall

OREM, Utah – The University Mall in Orem could soon be getting a major renovation, but the plan would impact neighborhoods in the surrounding area.

The Orem City Council met Tuesday night to hear from citizens regarding their opinions on the proposal.

University Mall Manager Rob Kallas said the requested zoning change would expand their offerings.

“This would allow other mixed uses and add to what we currently have with the shopping center, office buildings, residential, hotel, and other cultural type uses,” he said.

Some people are opposed to rushing toward approving the plan, like Arturo Morales, who chairs the community group Stand for Orem.

“The one concern we have is that this project has not been vetted sufficiently,” Morales said.

Becky Smith lives near the mall, and she said they found out about the proposal less than two months ago.

“[My] jaw dropped when we found out about the high density they're putting in there, and the possibility of other things that might come in,” Smith said.
