Utahns honor fallen veterans at Fort Douglas

SALT LAKE CITY – The second Saturday in December is a day when many across the nation honor fallen war veterans by placing holiday wreaths on their graves.

Dozens of military members, war veterans and their friends and family were at Fort Douglas Saturday to participate in Wreaths Across America.

Ensign Devaughn Simper, administration officer for the Battleship Utah Division of the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Corps., said the event can be especially powerful for young people.

“They get to learn not only the history of the cemetery here, but they get a stronger connection back to the veterans,” Devaughn said.

More than 800 locations across the nation participated in Wreaths Across America, which works to honor fallen soldiers.

Simper said this is the fourth year they have participated in the program at the military cemetery in Fort Douglas.
