TOOELE COUNTY, Utah — Several homes were evacuated in Tooele Wednesday night after police said a family reported they had found two boxes of dynamite in their basement, but it proved to be a false alarm.
At about 10:20 p.m. officials said the evacuation had been lifted after officials determined the boxes did not contain explosives but rather soap.
The home, located at 163 East and 100 South, was cordoned off and several nearby homes were evacuated.
Dispatch officials for the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office said residents doing a renovation believed they found two boxes of dynamite in a basement. At least one of the boxes was labeled with the word “dynamite,” according to a press release from Tooele County.
According to the release, about 20 homes within 500 feet of the residence were evacuated as a bomb squad responded to the scene. Authorities used X-ray equipment to assess and remove the boxes.
