SANDY, Utah – Police are investigating after a retired Salt Lake City Police officer was found dead in his Sandy home on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say 63-year-old Kevin Meik was found dead in his home on Wednesday afternoon after he missed an appointment that morning and police received a welfare check request.

“The individual who lives there has medical issues, he was supposed to be somewhere earlier in the morning but he wasn’t. We were called out there by the family to make sure he was okay,” said Sandy Police Sgt. Jon Arnold.

Officers arrived at Meik’s home at around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday and found his body. They say he sustained a gunshot wound that detectives say is not self-inflicted.

“Initially they thought it was possibly self- inflicted during the investigation. Later they were able to determine that it was not a self-inflicted gunshot wound which obviously
changed the focus of our investigation,” Arnold said.

Investigators don’t have any suspects yet and the investigation is still in process.

“At this point we’re interviewing family, seeing if there were any contacts they were aware of at this point. Just going through the process at this point,” Arnold said.
