OREM, Utah- It's Utah Valley University's first year in the Western Athletic Conference and their first time ever being up for an automatic NCAA bid. They've got six games left in their regular season, but they are currently on track to winning out the WAC.
UVU is currently 8-2 in WAC play and players said because of their success thus far, their fan base is growing.
"Sometimes it can be frustrating when you're walking down the halls and you see a BYU T-shirt or a Utah State T-shirt once and a while, and so it's been great to finally get some school pride behind us," senior point-guard Holton Hunsaker said.
Senior center Ben Aird added, "I'm a senior, I've been here for 4 years and the excitement this year is greater than it's ever been. People will see you at school and say 'Hey, I saw the game, great job! Keep up the good work! You're first place in the WAC' People are really getting excited about that."
If the Wolverines are able to hold onto the lead and win the WAC tournament, they would be headed to the big dance for the first time in school history.
"When March comes around, it's all that matters," Hunsaker said. "Everything else kind of shuts down, you have your bracket filled out and to see Utah Valley on a bracket would be... it would be pretty amazing."
"It would be the icing on the cake that all the hard work had paid off and we are finally able to do that for the first time in school history," Aird said. "So, that is something that we want to do, but we know there is a lot of hard work that needs to take place in these next couple of weeks."
The Wolverines have their next game at home in the UCCU Center against the Idaho Vandals Saturday night.
