SALT LAKE CITY -- A therapist accused of sexually abusing a teenage client was sentenced to prison Monday.

Scott Andrew Peterson, 36, admitted to sexually abusing a teenage patient, a girl who came to him looking for help last year.

Peterson said he was sorry for what he'd done, and as someone with no criminal history, he was hoping he would be sentenced to a year in jail and avoid prison. The court was not moved by Peterson's plea for mercy.

Prosecutors said the victim was a 16-year-old girl who needed help, and now she doesn't trust anybody.

The judge sentenced Peterson one to 15 years in prison. His fate now rests in the hands of the Utah Board of Pardons. He will likely have his first parole hearing later this year.

The victim and several members of her family were in court, but did not want to comment on the sentencing.

FOX 13's Scott McKane was at the sentencing Monday. Watch his full report in the clip above.
