SALT LAKE CITY -- A decision on a bill to make cockfighting a felony on the second offense came down to the last moments of the Utah Legislative Session Friday.
Under SB 112, cockfighting in Utah would be a Class A misdemeanor on the first offense and a felony on the second offense.
The bill passed the Senate with support from police and sheriffs, who were worried Utah could become the western state of choice for cockfighting.
In the end, the bill was not passed and, at least for a year, cockfighting remains a Class B misdemeanor in Utah.
