SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — An estimated 15,000 people reportedly participated in a spring break party, and more than 100 people were arrested after the situation escalated.

A spring break party in Isla Vista, near Santa Barbara, California, called “Deltopia” drew the crowd of thousands to what authorities called an unlawful assembly and then a major disturbance.

KTLA 5 in Los Angeles reports that things got more serious when a University of California, Santa Barbara police officer was allegedly hit in the head with a backpack filled with large bottles of alcohol.

As an arrest was being made, bystanders allegedly threw rocks, bricks, bottles and other items at authorities. The situation was raised from an unlawful assembly to a major disturbance, and multiple agencies responded. Chemical agents were among the measures used to control the crowds, KTLA 5 reports.

At least five sheriff’s deputies were injured and at least 44 people were taken to hospitals during the course of the evening.
