Victim from Spanish Fork crash fondly remembered by friends

OGDEN -- The sophomore girls’ basketball team at Bonneville High School is mourning the loss of their teammate, Katie Marcus, who died in a car crash during spring break.

Teammates spoke out Monday about Katie and what she meant to them as a team.

The girls said they had a losing season, but even at their worst moments Katie made them feel like winners.

"We had kind of a rough season but she always had her head up and always tried to encourage the team and get us pumped up for the game," said teammate Maddy Bell.

Katie, 16, and her 12-year-old brother Taylor died on their way home from their grandparent's house in Spanish Fork last Thursday.

Her friends said it was heartbreaking to come back to school Monday.

"Every time I walk in the halls I just remember her," said teammate Aubry Shaw.

The team has several tributes planned for Katie and they say they will continue to leave a place for her, if not on the bench, then in their hearts.

"This has been an incredible bonding experience for the team," said teammate Tammy Higgs. "Coming together and realizing how much we grew together and how much she really meant to us and how much we mean to each other -- that's something you never forget."
