BOUNTIFUL, Utah – Several Bountiful-area schools were on lockout Thursday afternoon as authorities attempted to locate a possibly suicidal individual who they believed had a gun and was not at home.
At about 3:25 p.m. officials tweeted that the individual had been located and was being detained. They said there was no further threat to public safety and that the lockout had been released at all schools.
According to information from the Bountiful Police Department, the individual had called a hotline and said he was having problems.
Police officials tweeted around 2:00 p.m. that the following schools were on lockout: Bountiful High School, Millcreek Junior High School, Mueller Park Junior High School, Bountiful Elementary School, Oak Hills Elementary School, Valley View Elementary School and St. Olaf.
At about 2:30 p.m., officials tweeted that the lockout had been lifted at all schools except Bountiful Elementary School.
Assistant Chief Ed Biehler, Bountiful Police Department, said police performed a welfare check at the residence near 1500 S. 500 West. Officials said they believed the individual was not at home. Authorities placed nearby schools on lockout as a precaution. This means the doors to the schools were locked, but things continued on as normal inside.
