MURRAY, Utah — A 2014 Volkswagen Beetle went up in flames early Monday morning, and investigators from the Murray City Fire Department said the fire is suspicious.

The car was parked behind an LDS church at 932 W Green Oaks Dr. and caught fire around 5:30.

Fire officials responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call from a nearby resident.

“I just heard a boom and, you know, it sounded kind of like a sonic boom, but obviously at 5:30 a.m. it’s not something like that,” said Corbin Weller. “I kept hearing sounds, so I finally just got up and looked at my rear window and could see the flames shooting up and got on 911.”

Fire officials worked Monday morning at tracking down the owner of the car, which was moved to a secure lot.
