SALT LAKE CITY – Crews rescued a man who hit his head while free climbing in the Neff Canyon area Friday night.

Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department said the 18-year-old man is from the Salt Lake Valley and was climbing with a 19-year-old woman when he fell about 6 feet and hit his head.

Reports of the incident began to come in at about 5:20 p.m. The woman called 911 and stopped the man’s injury from bleeding. Salt Lake County Search and Rescue teams arrived on the scene and worked to lead the man safely out of the canyon. Hoyal said several low angle drops in the area made the extraction difficult.

The man was out of the canyon by about 9:45 p.m., and officials said his injuries are not life threatening.
