Moab man dies in job-related accident, officials say

MOAB, Utah — Police are investigating a job-related accident after one man was killed Monday morning in Moab.

Jay L. Stephens, 51, of Moab,  was working for Bob’s Sanitation at the time of the incident, according to a press release from Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

Stephens was at a transfer station where he and the driver of a garbage truck had just unloaded in one of the bays. The gate in the bay had been raised and the truck’s load had been pushed out of the cargo area of truck, according to the release.

The release indicates that the driver of the truck pulled forward and stopped when the lift gate was then lowered.

Stephens was crushed to death when he reportedly got caught between the lift gate and the rear of the truck as the gate was lowered.
