LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah — The body of a Chicago-area tourist was found near Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort Friday, and a representative for the Unified Police Department said it appears the victim fell 400 feet to his death.

According to UPD’s Ken Hansen, the 64-year-old victim William Pierce checked into a Midvale hotel on Wednesday, rented a car and sent his family a picture of himself that had been taken in the Twin Peaks area.

“He had communicated to his family that he had taken the tram, he had gone to a certain area, and had taken an image, so we had that information to start off with. That kind of expedited the recovery,” said Hansen.

Since the victim was found in the Twin Peaks area, police said they believe he fell at some point Wednesday night.

The victim’s family became concerned after he missed his flight home Friday, Hansen said.

Search and rescue crews from Salt Lake County were dispatched to the scene to recover the man’s body.

Police said the victim has a history of heart trouble.
