SALT LAKE CITY -- Utahns can apply for a special card that will allow them to legally possess hemp oil for medical treatment.

The Utah Department of Health gave out hemp extract registration cards for the first time on Tuesday. It's a day families across the state have been anxiously waiting for.

Utah's new cannabis oil program allows adults and children with severe epilepsy to legally possess hemp oil to help cut down on their seizures. While the effectiveness is still being studied hundreds of Utah families are expected to apply for the hemp extract registration card.

“We`ve been waiting for this day for some time and to be able to come and actually hold that application and fill it out and turn it in and get this process started specifically for my daughter is really exciting,” said Karen Glenn, who has a daughter with epilepsy.

The registration card is good for one year only. And patients have to re-apply each year. Once they're registered, they get on a waiting list for the actual hemp oil.

Utahns signing up for the cards hear it could take three months to get the hemp oil.
