Business owner on mulch fire: millions in damages will take months to repair, jobs lost

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — A massive fire sent plumes of smoke into the skies over the Salt Lake Valley and temporarily shut down lanes of I-15 earlier this week, and now the owner of a nearby business damaged by the blaze says the impact on their operations have been significant.

A fire broke out Thursday night at Diamond Tree Experts’ mulch pile, which was an estimated 70-feet high and an acre wide, and the owner of American West Analytic Laboratories said the fire did about $4 million in damages to their facility, which is near Diamond Tree Experts.

Steven Detz, owner of the labs, told FOX 13 News it will take several months for them to repair and reopen the lab, and he said between 30 and 40 full-time employees could be out of work due to the incident.

FOX 13 News had crews at the scene Thursday as firefighters battled the massive blaze, click here for video from the scene.

Officials stated earlier in the week that Diamond Tree Experts will not have to relocate but said the size of the mulch pile may have been a violation of city code.
