WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - A traffic stop ended with police discovering a bigger crime in West Valley City.

A police officer was doing his regular checks at hotel near Decker Lake Dr. and 35th S. when he noticed what he said were suspicious vehicles.

Authorities said the cars sped out of the parking lot so officers followed.

The officer tried to pull over the cars; a white SUV stopped but a black car sped away.

The driver of the black car ditched it in a neighborhood about four blocks away.

The suspect ran but officers caught up with him near Redwood Rd. and 3100 S.

"He admitted that he and the other occupant of the second vehicle, that we did stop, had just committed a robbery at a hotel room at one of the hotels over there at the Extended Stay for a drug debt," Sgt. Todd Grey said.

Police said the driver of the white SUV and the people staying in the hotel room that was allegedly robbed denied having anything to do with the robbery.

The driver of the car, Nicholas Anderson, was arrested for traffic violations at the scene and has a previous criminal record.
