SALT LAKE CITY – A new phone scam is going around where callers pose as Salt Lake City police officers.

Officers said the call from the scammer even shows the Salt Lake City Police phone number on the caller ID, (801)799-3000.

If you answer, the scammer usually says you have warrants out for your arrest and in order to clear the warrant, you must put cash on a pre-paid money card.

Once the victim gives the security code from the card, the scammer siphons the card dry.

Police said no reputable agency or business collects payments in that manner.

If you get a call like this, hang up.
