TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — A teacher whose gun went off in a Taylorsville elementary school bathroom has been charged.

Michelle Ferguson-Montgomery was charged with one misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm in a prohibited area.

Charging documents indicate the woman initially misled police. On September 11, Ferguson-Montgomery’s 9-milimeter pistol discharged in the staff restroom at Westbrook Elementary School and the bullet hit a toilet. The woman suffered an injury to her calf caused by fragments from the toilet.

She has since quit her job.
