SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — South Jordan police found two burglary suspects hiding out right next to the police station after a store security officer reported the crime to police.
Marcel Gregory Redding, 28, and Salvador Joe Manzano, 24, were allegedly shoplifting from a South Jordan Wal-Mart when the store’s security officer confronted them.
Police officials said one of the suspects told the security personnel he had a gun. The security officer let them go and quickly called police with a detailed description of the two men.
Sam Winkler, a master officer with South Jordan Police Department, said that was the right decision.
“He didn’t try to take matters into his own hands, and that’s what we recommend everybody do if they’re ever encountering this type of situation,” he said. “If someone’s threatening a weapon, whether you see one or not, let them go. Become a great witness, get a good description, and call 911 right away.”
The suspects drove to a Harmon’s grocery store and went inside. That store was just around the corner from the South Jordan Police Department, and officers were able to locate the two and take them into custody.
