MAPPLEWOOD, Minn. – Surveillance video released shows a disturbing attack on nurses by a patient at St John’s Hospital in Minnesota.
“That kind of thing can happen. Happens all the time,” Mary Turner said, a member of the MN Nurses Association.
The video shows 68-year-old Charles Logan using a bar pulled from the side of his hospital bed to attack them.
Logan ran through and then back behind the nurses station hitting four of the eight nurses on staff.
“In the hallway shot you can see those same people are coming out the door,” Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said.
The nurses tried to get away they even attempted to secure the doors to the ward behind them so Logan could not continue his attack.
“Two of them actually fell down in the hallway and they were repeatedly struck by the man with the pole,” Shnell said.
Investigators say they are still trying to figure out what caused Charles Logan to attack the nurses.
People who know him told authorities it is out of character for Logan.
The video shows actions of a man family and friends said they just don’t recognize.
Once Logan got outside, police tried to use a taser to stop his rampage.
“The taser was ineffective, in other words, it did not connect to the man,” Shnell said.
Officials tackled Logan and handcuffed him.
He died moments after he was taken into custody.
Logan’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, the Minneapolis Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
