SALT LAKE CITY — An injured man was taken into police custody after attempting to rob a gas station early Saturday morning.
According to information from the Salt Lake City Police Department, around 3:40 a.m. 24-year-old Siaosi Tuifua walked into a Maverik store at 1270 South Main St. and demanded money.
The clerk refused, so the suspect went behind the counter and tried to grab cigarettes, at which point the clerk used an ax handle to defend himself, police said. The suspect took the ax handle out of the clerk’s hands and chased the clerk around the store.
The suspect fled but a short time later a 911 call was made, and crews who responded found a man with a head wound who was determined to be the suspect in the robbery.
Tuifua was booked into jail on charges of robbery and aggravated assault after he received medical attention at a local hospital.
