PROVO, Utah – The turkey you serve this Thanksgiving may save your life one day.
A new study out of Brigham Young University shows that turkey contains a bacteria that actually produces an antibiotic.
Known as Strain 115, the bacteria produces the M-P-1 antibiotic, which targets staph infections, strep throat, severe gastrointestinal diseases and roughly half of all infectious bacteria.
The antibiotic isn’t in widespread use because of its complex structure, but this discovery means that could change.
The findings of the study are published in the Journal of Bacteriology.
