KEARNS, Utah -- A fire that started at a warehouse Tuesday night destroyed a cabinet shop and two businesses.
Unified Fire officials responded to a warehouse near 4900 S 5200 W shortly after 9 p.m. The warehouse is shared by a cabinet shop and two businesses that sell pallets.
Since all three businesses store a large amount of wood, a significant amount of damage had already been done by the time firefighters arrived.
"The fire was already pretty extensive when we got here. The roof was already beginning to collapse due to the fire spread at the time that we got here," said Brian Anderton, Unified Fire Authority. "The fire was just out of control before we got here."
Anderton said the cold weather made the firefighting effort especially difficult.
"Obviously, when we're fighting fires in this kind of weather, you know, the water tends to freeze. It becomes very heavy on our equipment. We have to worry about slip and fall hazards for our firefighters, as well as the conditions that we create in the area with the water flowing off," Anderton said.
Low water pressure in the area also made it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
