Police warn about the ‘skimmer scammer’ at Orem ATM

Posted

OREM, Utah — Orem police are looking for a man who installed a scanning machine on an ATM machine in order to steal customers’ money.

It’s the latest installment in the department’s so-called “Tattle Tale Tuesday.”

The thief also put a camera near the ATM to watch as customers entered their PINs.

Bank customers reported fraudulent activities on the card and reported it to the bank, who called the police.

Lt. Craig Martinez with the Orem Police Department said he always goes to the same ATM so he knows what the scanner looks like and would recognize an addition.

Martinez added that such crimes have occurred in other places along the Wasatch Front, and the FBI is investigating.

“We’re working with the FBI Cyber Task Force,” Martinez said.

Anyone with information on the “skimmer scammer” is asked to call Orem police at 801-229-7070.
