MCKINNEY, Texas -- A police officer in Texas is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into a video that shows the officer handcuffing and pulling a weapon on several juveniles, who were at a pool party police received several calls about. The callers stated the juveniles did not have permission to be at the community pool and had refused to leave, and there also reports of a fight.
CBS 11 reports the incident occurred Friday when a group of officers responded to a pool in McKinney, Texas after several neighbors called to report that several juveniles who did not live in the area and did not have permission to be there were present and refused to leave. Witnesses tell CBS11 a fight allegedly broke out between juveniles and adults in that area.
When police arrived, they reportedly encountered a large crowd with many who refused to comply with police commands or instructions to leave. A YouTube video posted Saturday shows one officer yelling and even cursing at several teens, telling some to get on the ground and others to leave.
At about 3 minutes into the video, the video shows the officer in an altercation with a teen girl he ordered to get on the ground. As the interaction appeared to turn rough, bystanders began to scream and surround the officer, who draws his weapon as people run and the teen screams "I want my Momma".
Several other officers can be seen rushing forward, appearing to be trying to keep the officer who drew his weapon from further physical interaction with nearby bystanders.
Thee teen was handcuffed, and reportedly later released without citation.
"A fight between a mom and a girl broke out and the cops were called" according to Brandon Brooks, who shot the video. "and when the cops showed up everyone ran, including the people who didn't do anything. So the cops just started putting everyone on the ground and in handcuffs for no reason. This kind of force is uncalled for especially on children and innocent bystanders." The video describes.
Brooks told Buzzfeed News" I think a bunch of white parents were angry that a bunch of black kids who don't live in the neighborhood were at the pool."
Other teens told Buzzfeed the police were called after a fight broke out between adults and teens at the pool. Some adults made racist comments and told them to return to “Section 8 [public] housing.”
According to a Facebook post from the local police department, one officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the video, which they stated has "raised some concerns that are being investigated by the McKinney Police Department."
In a press conference, the local police chief told CBS 11 he is committed to a complete and thorough investigation into the incident.
He said of the incident: "“Officers were confronted by a large group of people. Private security and homeowners were pointing out juveniles who were creating the disturbance, fighting, and refusing to leave."
CBS 11 is offering updates and local coverage on the story, including a comment from the McKinny Mayor, who stated he was "Disturbed and concerned by the incident and actions in the video." Visit CBS 11 for the full statement and more details on the incident.
