SALT LAKE CITY — Police in Salt Lake City identified a man, Tuesday, who was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident Saturday morning.
The man was identified as 23-year-old Adrian Gonzalez.
The crash occurred in the area of Columbus Street and Victory Road, and FOX 13 News first heard reports of the crash just before 6 a.m.
“We responded to the scene and discovered the pedestrian had passed away at the scene, at which point we called out our detective personnel to follow up on the traffic accident investigation,” said Lt. Stefhan Bennett, Salt Lake City Police Department.
Bennett said it appears Gonzalez was walking in the southbound travel lane when he was struck, and he said the driver of the vehicle does not appear to have been impaired in any way. The speed limit in the area is 60 mph, and Bennett said it appears the vehicle was traveling at about that speed when the crash occurred.
While Bennett said it is uncommon for a pedestrian to be in the travel lane, he said drivers should always be aware of the possibility of pedestrians in the road.
“No, it would have been out of the ordinary to expect [a pedestrian] in the roadway, but, as you know, you should be prepared for that, expect it while you’re driving a vehicle,” he said.
Victory Road was closed for several hours as crews investigated the crash scene.
The driver of the vehicle was also the sole occupant, and no other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
