CENTERVILLE, Utah -- Two people have been arrested in connection with at least 20 home and car burglaries that have occurred in Centerville over the past two weeks.
The men were spotted hiding in a car early Saturday morning on Island View Drive. One of them was armed with a gun. That suspect is 21-year-old Richard Martinez. The other suspect's name is not being released because he is a minor.
According to police, a resident was on his deck around 3 a.m. when he saw the suspects walking around the neighborhood acting suspicious and going into people's yards.
The burglars were actually caught on a night vision security camera. It appears one of them was wearing a mask over his face.
The neighbor called the police. When officers arrived, they began searching the neighborhood. They discovered the two men hiding in the back seat of a car. The suspects were arrested without incident, though Martinez did have a gun in his waistband.
They also had stolen items with them from four different burglaries that took place the night before.
"I noticed that my car has been broken into at least three different times and my shed doors have been left open, so it's been a nightly thing, almost every other night someone is coming through around two or three in the morning and grabbing whatever they can grab," said victim Michael Whitley. "I think it's great that they were able to find them and at least return some of the stuff, and it's also nice to know that hopefully this will stop. We won't have to worry about stuff so much."
According to police, these suspects typically accessed cars and homes through unlocked doors in the middle of the night.
