SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's congressional delegation is having a big week working toward major prison reform, creating a new education funding program, and even meeting with the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for president in 2016.
Senator Mike Lee and Congressman Jason Chaffetz both met with President Barack Obama, discussing reforms on criminal sentencing. The two Utahns are at the head of a growing bipartisan consensus that sentencing guidelines are too draconian for non-violent drug offenders.
"People have to understand that more than 95 percent of the people that go to prison, they're coming back out so we better work to get them rehabilitated," Chaffetz said.
President Obama praised Sen. Lee by name when he talked about the issue in his press conference on Wednesday.
In the meantime, Senator Orrin Hatch made significant amendments to the 'Every Child Achieves' Act that passed the Senate on Thursday.
Hatch added a program called "Pay for Success" intended to provide grants to local programs that can prove they are working.
Congresswoman Mia Love made headlines for meeting with Hillary Clinton. It wasn't a private meeting. Love was one member of the Congressional Black Caucus in a meeting with the Democrat, but she was the only Republican in the room and the only Republican who had a chance to talk with Clinton during a whole day of meetings on Capitol Hill.
