WVC jogger mugged; police searching for suspect

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- A woman told police she was jogging in West Valley City late Tuesday evening when she was mugged by an armed man who jumped out from the side of the road, and police are now looking for that suspect.

Police said it happened just before midnight near 6000 West and 3500 South.

The 24-year-old woman told police she saw a short man wearing a ski mask and a puffy winter jacket on the side of the road, and as she ran past him, he pulled out a gun and demanded money.

She didn't have any, so he took her cell phone. She laid on the ground and said he took off running.

“I don't think we've had a jogger robbed in this type of situation, it was pretty unusual,” said Lt. Jeff Conger of West Valley City PD. “Property isn't worth risking your life over, just give them your stuff and let them get out of there. Then give us a call right when you're safe to do so.”

When police arrived they set up containment and several officers, including K9 units, searched the area.

Officers say they spotted a Hispanic teen but he got through some fences, and they haven't been able to catch him yet.

Police believe he lives in the area and they have some leads that could identify him.
