HOLLADAY, Utah -- Unified police, along with several other agencies, are searching for a man who escaped from police after a chase Wednesday morning, and officers stated the armed and dangerous suspect is among the Metro Gang Unit's "Top 10" most wanted fugitives.

The Metro Gang Unit spotted 24-year-old Stephen C. Hammer near 5600 South 1300 East around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, and police followed him until he noticed the officer behind him, then he took off.

Police said Hammer drove all the way to 3900 South, where he turned around and ended up at the Turnberry Apartment Complex near 4500 South.

Officers spiked the suspect’s tires, and Hammer ran away on foot into the neighborhood just east of the apartments.

Police said an unknown woman was also in the car, and she ran away as well once the chase reached the apartment complex.

Officers set up containment and searched with the help of K9 units from UPD and Salt Lake City PD, but they were unable to find him.

“He used a gun in the robbery, and so we still consider him armed and dangerous,” Lt. Manfred Lassig of the Unified Police Department said.

A press release states Hammer is listed as one of the Metro Gang Unit’s Top 10 fugitives and is on UPD’s Most Wanted list as well. The man is the suspect in multiple burglaries, thefts, firearm thefts and other crimes.

Anyone who sees Hammer or who has knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to call police at 801-743-7000.
