CACHE COUNTY, Utah — A 77-year-old man from Logan drowned at Cutler Reservoir near Newton Sunday afternoon while out kayaking with his wife.
According to a press release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, the 77-year-old man and his wife, both from Logan, were kayaking on Cutler Reservoir around 11 a.m. when both fell out of their boats about a mile northwest of the boat dock.
Neither person was wearing a life jacket, and the wife secured her kayak as the man swam toward shore. The two were communicating with each other by voice, but after a few minutes the wife realized her husband had stopped talking to her. At that time, she located him face down in the water.
The woman called 911 from a cell phone, and deputies responded to the area along with search and rescue and medical personnel from Newton, Smithfield and Logan.
The man was retrieved from the water after a citizen-owned boat transported EMTs to his location. The unresponsive man was taken to Logan Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Detectives from Cache County are investigating the death, which at this time is being considered an accident, according to the press release.
The identities of those involved have not yet been released.
