Mashable compiled the statistics and found selfies have killed more people this year than shark attacks.

The study shows 12 people have died while taking selfies while only eight have been killed by sharks.

Experts say the risk isn’t in the picture itself, it’s another case of user error.

People are paying more attention to taking the photo than to their surroundings.

One person recently fell down the stairs while snapping the shot and died.

Another man was killed trying to take a selfie as he was running with the bulls in Spain.

Selfies have become such a hazard in Russia the government has launched a “Safe Selfie” campaign.
